An arrest warrant has been issued for a Prince George, B.C., woman who has allegedly failed to take her medication for tuberculosis.

[NEW DELHI] Believing that affordable diagnostics are key to controlling tuberculosis (TB), world experts are looking to India to come up with suitable kits.  

For too long, children with tuberculosis have been neglected. Children tend to have paucibacillary disease and be therefore less infectious than adults, meaning they have not been prioritized by the WHO Global Tuberculosis Control strategy. This neglect has resulted in many problems. Firstly, there has been no impetus for governments to prioritize paediatric programmes. Secondly, diagnostics and drugs have not been adapted for children. And thirdly, inadequate reporting has meant that the exact scale of the problem is largely unknown

“Elimination of tuberculosis (TB) is more than an aspiration. We know it could become a reality, but this will happen only if we achieve radical transformation in the way TB is diagnosed, treated and prevented. This goal can be realized only if TB research is intensified and envisioned in an entirely new way.” These are the first words of Lucica Ditiu, Executive Secretary of Stop TB Partnership, in the International Roadmap of Tuberculosis Research, launched this weekend in Lille.

The advanced culture test results with the NanoLogix BNP technology are at least 500% faster than the 21-day standard for live TB culture detection. Additionally, other test methods for tuberculosis are expensive, labor intensive and cannot determine if a microbe found in a sample is living or dead. The NanoLogix technology provides a significant advantage over conventional methods for detecting TB in developing regions where medical resources are scarce and TB infections are rampant.

A report released online earlier this week states that effective partnerships can improve tuberculosis responses globally. The summary report, titled, "Whole Is Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts", was also distributed at the 42nd Union World Conference on Lung Health in Lille, France. This report is the summary of the online consultation that was facilitated by CNS: www.citizen-news.org – a partner of the Stop TB Partnership - using social media platforms and  also the Stop-TB eForum that was established by the Health and Development Networks (HDN) in early 2001, and currently is supported by the Stop TB Partnership, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) and the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, and managed by CNS. The online consultation was held during October 2011.
